Pre-Event Nutrition
Digestion is a thermogenic and metabolically active process. Eating too close to your sleep block elevates core temperature and heart rate, destroying architecture.
The Fasting Window
Elite competitors implement a strict 3-hour minimum fasting window before sleep onset. No calories. Water only.
Late meals require blood flow to the GI tract and prevent the nocturnal dip in heart rate and body temperature necessary for N3 deep sleep.
Macronutrient Timing
The composition of your final meal impacts sleep latency and architecture.
Carbohydrates
High glycemic index carbs (white rice, potatoes) consumed 4 hours prior to sleep can significantly reduce sleep latency by facilitating tryptophan crossing the blood-brain barrier.
Protein & Fat
Heavy proteins and saturated fats digest slowly. Keep them minimal in the final meal to prevent nocturnal acid reflux and elevated metabolic rate.
Hydration Strategy
Nocturia (waking to urinate) is a primary cause of fragmented sleep and lost efficiency points.
- Front-load hydration early in the day.
- Cease fluid intake 2 hours before the sleep block.
- Ensure adequate sodium/potassium balance to retain fluid intracellularly rather than in the bladder.
Alcohol is Banned
While alcohol may reduce sleep latency (sedation), it is one of the most potent REM-suppressors known. It fragments the second half of the night and spikes heart rate. Consuming alcohol during the competition guarantees a low architecture score.
